Call for proposals:
Joint Grant Program for a scientific stay in France 2025

The Embassy of France in Japan and Kiyoko Goto and Paul Bourdarie Cancer Foundation provide subsidies to researchers or doctors (living or staying in Japan) who hopes to stay at research institutes in France for a certain period, with the aim of sharing knowledge about cancer treatment and contributing to the cancer eradication.

Eligibility criteria

Applicant should be a person as shown below, living or staying in Japan at the time of entry, who desires to stay in France for 2 weeks to 3 months for the purpose of research (any nationality except for French is acceptable). An invitation letter from institutes or reseachers is required.

  1. Young Researcher
    • (1)Doctoral course student belonging to a Japanese university
    • (2)Young postdoctoral researcher or researcher belonging to a Japanese institute or organization who obtained his/her doctoral degree less than 5 years ago at the time of entry in France
  2. Mid-career or experienced researcher (Postdoctoral researcher or researcher who obtained his/her doctoral degree at least 5 years ago at the time of entry in France)
  3. Doctor(M.D.)

Application areas

Research areas related to the eradication of cancer, which specifically include:

Clinical medicine, Basic medicines (surgery, internal medicine, radiology, pathology, molecular biology, epidemiology), Multi-organ area related to metastasis, Palliative medicine, Preventive medicine, Terminal care, Biomedical engineering

Institutes to visit French university or national research institute (CNRS, INSERM, INRAE etc.) or other public institute approved by the French government
Period of stay

2 weeks (14 days) at least to 3 months (90 days) at longest

* In case of stay over 91 days, Embassy of France in Japan will support acquisition of visa. 

Scope of funding
  1. Cost for round-trip airline ticket between Japan and France (economy class)
  2. Accommodation expenses
    1. (1)Young researcher: for 2 weeks to 3 months (about 18,000 yen/day)
    2. (2)Mid-career or experienced researcher/doctor: for 2 weeks to 3 months (about 21,000 yen/day)
  3. Social insurance during stay in France
  4. We will introduce accommodations during stay in France at preference rate.
  • * Number of subsidized researchers: 1-2 researchers
  • * If the applicant stays in France over 3 months (90 days), however, accommodation expenses and social insurance will not be provided for the period exceeding 90 days.
  • * Flights are paid for round trips within 90 days. If the return flight exceeds this limit, it will not be paid.
  • * A post-visit report must be sent to the Embassy and to the Foundation no later than 3 months after the visit has been completed.

Notification of results Results will be notified via email in March 2025.

Screening criteria

Necessity and public interest Research topic is highly and urgently needed from the society
Reason why the researcher needs to tackle that research topic is clear
Research is not for commercial purpose or does not highly possibly lead to profit-making activity
Research has not already been completed substantially
Research topic does not require a huge amount of costs
Originality and pioneering Research topic is original and involves novel approach that has not been tried so far
Research topic contains any new unprecedented point of view, idea or method
Continuity, ripple effect and development of research Research is not a one-off study and is expected to be expanded or continued, or has ripple effect
Research is expected to be developed under this subsidy
Motivation and ability of applicant Applicant is highly motivated and has high ability and the applicant’s research plan and the research system of the institution the applicant belongs to are excellent
Development of Japan- France cooperation Considering the relationship among institutions, the purpose and significance of the applicant’s visit to the research institution are expected to lead to stronger Japan-France cooperation
